Ice, Ice, Baby!

Our teacher, Natalie had fun at the weekend with her children filling balloons with water and freezing them.  It was such a hot day, that she brought two to school for us to experiment with.

We had a lot of fun, predicting what would happen when we poured on food colouring or salt.  We also looked at whether we thought the ice would float or sink in a container of water.  When we put a piece of paper on the water, it floated for a while, then sank to the bottom.

"We had salt to sprinkle on the ice.  It went POP!  When we put blue food colouring on it, it melted off.  When I touched it, it was cold.  When we pulled the balloon off the ice, it was a circle. We put the ice in the water and it floated.  The ice ball was shaped like a crystal bag."

The ice made a crack then went back again when we put salt on it.  The ice floated on the water.  I thought it would drown.  The paper floated like a boat, then sunk.
